SA Police first in Australia to use fast and accurate NEC fingerprint scanning technology

Date: 5 May 2011
Category: New Technology

Melbourne, May 5 2011: NEC Australia today announced that South Australia Police (SAPOL) will be the first organisation in Australia to implement NEC’s LiveScan fingerprint scan technology, allowing SAPOL to collect identity information quickly and accurately.

NEC will be implementing 20 LiveScan fingerprinting capturing systems at SAPOL’s police stations across metropolitan and remote locations.

Lance Heather, Senior Product Specialist and Business Development Manager at NEC Australia said: “The digitising of fingerprint images means identity information can be collected in a matter of seconds, which is a significant improvement on past technology. NEC’s LiveScan will give SAPOL fingerprint displays in real-time, providing immediate positive identification.”

Fingerprint scans are transmitted directly to Australian Federal Government agency CrimTrac who manage the central fingerprint database located in Canberra. The image is automatically checked and the relevant identity information (either a match or non-match) is provided to SAPOL.

“NEC leads the world in fingerprint algorithm technology and this system will provide numerous benefits to SAPOL. The LiveScan application, including a built-in browser and user-friendly geographic user interface (GUI), can be customised so that tailor screen images can align with the customer’s business flow and environment to allow for maximum results,” Mr Heather said.

NEC will provide a full service as part of a three-year agreement, including delivery and implementation of the solution, and will also provide support and maintenance.
