Corporate Citizenship & Community
Giving back to the community
NEC Australia is committed to giving back to society. NEC support a number of community and environmental initiatives:
NEC Northern Territory Indigenous Education Programmes
NEC Australia is the largest technology services supplier in the Northern Territory (NT) and has a long partnership with the NT Government in the region.
NEC’s significant remote community services arm in the NT provides ICT support by plane and road to around 90 communities in the area. In undertaking this ICT support NEC has recognised that indigenous employment and training is an important issue and has developed education programmes specifically for the local community.
In 2007, NEC Australia launched its School-Based Apprenticeship and Indigenous Traineeship programme in partnership with the Northern Territory’s Structured Work Placement programme. Through this programme NEC provides ICT traineeship scholarships to senior students living in remote NT communities. One of the keys to the success of the training programme is that it's linked to real jobs across the NT. On successful completion of the traineeship, each participant is offered permanent employment with NEC or one of NEC’s regional partners.
Building on the success of the School-Based Apprenticeship and Indigenous Traineeship programme, NEC will launch its IT Apprenticeship Hub at the beginning of 2014. This 12-month programme aims to produce a minimum of 50 ‘work ready’ apprentices over the next five years. Half of the apprentices will be young, indigenous Australians, helping improve employment choices for students from indigenous communities in the NT. The programme will connect students with technical expertise and resources within the ICT industry and help develop the skill-base within NT to support local IT businesses. An apprentice will spend two days a week training at NEC’s Service Delivery Centre and one day a week at CDU over the 12 months. Participants will gain exposure to a wide variety of roles at NEC Australia’s onsite Service Delivery Centre and the NT Department of Education. On completion of the programme, apprentices may be offered continued placement as a School-Based Apprentice, a full time traineeship, a full time position at NEC Australia or become available for other Northern Territory IT businesses to employ.
NEC Employee Community Grants Programme
NEC Australia’s Employee Community Grants Programme enables NEC employees to apply for grants for charity organisations in which they volunteer. Employee volunteering is a global NEC corporate objective and one way NEC Australia supports and gives back to the community.
NEC Make-a-Difference Drive
NEC’s Make-a-Difference Drive is a worldwide NEC corporate initiative, where employees are encouraged to give back to the community. More than 1,070,000 NEC employees across the world have been involved in the Make-a-Difference Drive, since it was established in 1999.
Make-a-Difference Drive is held during October and November. This year, NEC Australia is supporting Movember, which aims to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, particularly prostate cancer and depression. Visit the Movember website: www.movember.com.au
Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea
As part of the Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea initiative, NEC encourages teams to organise morning teas to raise awareness and funding for cancer research and prevention. Visit the campaign website: www.biggestmorningtea.com.au
